MARTIN whistled “Danny Boy” to himself as he put the finishing touches on an oversized dark chocolate mocha cupcake he was making just for Lyall. The decorations weren’t as fancy or detailed as they could have been if he’d made it at the bakery, but he’d managed to create a passable fondant figure of a dark-haired man in a kilt that was flying up in the back, revealing a rosy bare backside. Over the weekend, he’d learned that Lyall had a prodigious sweet tooth, and he hoped the old adage about the way to win a man’s heart held true in Lyall’s case.
After a night of music and romance in the moonlight, Martin had invited himself into Lyall’s bed, seeing no reason why he ought to sleep alone in the spare bed when they both enjoyed cuddling. He’d been tempted to see if he could persuade Lyall to do more than cuddle, but he didn’t want to seem pushy, and he was fine with taking things slow.
For all his initial caution, Martin tended to plow full steam ahead once he’d made up his mind about something. Lyall had made it clear he found Martin interesting and attractive, and Martin didn’t see any reason to hold back now that he knew exactly where he stood with Lyall. He certainly didn’t regret his forwardness when he woke up wrapped in Lyall’s arms—warm and cozy and reluctant to get up and start the day—as he’d once fantasized about doing.
Once they’d opened up the booth, he had convinced Lyall he would be fine on his own if Lyall wanted to go warm up and get in a little practice before the competition. The truth was, he wanted Lyall out of the booth so he could bake the special cupcake and get it decorated in time for the caber toss, and he managed to finish it up right as they called the competitors onto the field.
He packed up the cupcake and closed up the booth, leaving a note on the front saying he’d be back later so no one would think he’d left the Games early. Fergus was looking woebegone over the prospect of being left alone, and since Martin didn’t really want to leave Fergus in the booth surrounded by tempting things to eat, he snapped on Fergus’s leash and hobbled out to the field using just one crutch, the leash looped over one wrist and a small cake carrier in his free hand.
When he reached the stands, a couple of people on the front row scooted over and invited him to sit down, and he accepted gratefully, settling in to watch the testosterone-soaked display of strength and studliness.
All the competitors were kilt-clad large men with powerful muscles and determined expressions, who made the act of throwing a twenty-foot long, 175-pound log seem easy. Many of them were far larger than Lyall, but the object wasn’t just to see how far the caber could be tossed; there was skill involved, because the closer to straight out from the competitor the caber landed, the more points the judges awarded.
